I was upset when the butchers shop in Rushey Green closed last year as I used it regularly. Imagine how disappointed I am now to learn that green grocer’s C&B Fruiterers next door has closed as well. Admittedly they have not gone from Catford completely as they will continue to run the stall outside Tesco but still the shop will be missed by me. Let the speculation as … [Read more...]
New build on George Lane taking shape
London and Quadrant Housing Association's affordable housing scheme on the corner of George Lane and Rushey Green has really taken shape. We mentioned back in October that the George pub was to be replaced by a new housing development and now here it is (almost). It looks like it's nearing completion. Click on the image below for a closer … [Read more...]
Gorgeous Gifts and Accessories
The thing about writing for a blog is that sometimes you have to go out and find something to report on. Armed with my camera phone, I decided to walk on the other side of Rushey Green (not the cat side), and I’m glad I did. I discovered Gorgeous Gifts and Accessories and managed to spend £16.00 just browsing. The shop has been there for over a year and sells trinkets, … [Read more...]
Motown Soul bar last orders
A planning application was made last month to demolish the Motown Soul bar in Rushey Green and turn it into a retail unit with flats above. The proposal states: The demolition of the existing building at 93-95 Rushey Green SE6, and the construction of a four storey building comprising 2 retail units (Use Classes A1/A2) on the ground floor (247 sqm) and 1, one bedroom and 8, … [Read more...]
Nationwide closing branches in Catford and Lewisham
I received a letter from Nationwide Building Society today saying they will be closing local branches. That means the Catford and Lewisham branches will be closing at the end of May. If you're thinking you can grab a bus to Blackheath or Greenwich forget it, as those branches are also closing. As are Peckham, Walworth and Woolwich. The letter assures me that even after the … [Read more...]
Community Garden for Catford
Rushey Green Time Bank (RGTB) plan to open a Community Garden in Catford. The proposal will involve the use of a 100 yard long strip of derelict land adjacent to the Long Meadows Allotment site, located between Catford Hill and the Pool River. This space should be enough for multiple allotment plots and a small fruit orchard. Permission to develop the site has been obtained … [Read more...]
George pub to be replaced by affordable housing
The former George Inn Public House at 1 Rushey Green, Catford, built originally around 1700-20, is being redeveloped. When complete, the site of the former 19th Century coaching inn will house two apartment buildings comprising 33 affordable homes for London and Quadrant Housing Association, as well as a Tesco Metro shop. (Because we really need another Tesco Metro … [Read more...]
Drinking control zone in place across Lewisham
A Designated Public Place Order (DPPO), commonly known as a drinking control zone, has been put in place across the borough of Lewisham following consultation with residents and businesses during the summer. Rushey Green has been highlighted as one of three areas where street drinking is a problem, in a report that was considered by Lewisham's Mayor & Cabinet. Fritz and … [Read more...]
Application to demolish The Rising Sun – again
Okay. The Rising Sun had become a crack house but it was a gorgeous looking building. Once again developers will put an application to Committee to tear down the pub and build flats. If memory serves two applications have been refused already but this time it seems there is a recommendation to approve this particular application. Previous objections have raised issues of … [Read more...]
Ward councillors
Lewisham’s elected representatives work for us at four levels: The Mayor and local councillors are responsible for local services including street cleaning, schools, libraries, neighbourhood wardens and social services. The Mayor and councillors are elected every four years. The Mayor of London and Lewisham’s London Assembly member are responsible for citywide policies … [Read more...]
