I seem to whinge a lot about shops closing down so I decided to keep quiet about Appetito going under. I've not even speculated (much) as to whether Costa coming to Catford had a knock on effect. But the loss of the Chinese restaurant King's Chow Mein is something I have to mention. King's has been around for at least 15 years (if not more) and it made for an easy take away … [Read more...]
More shops closing in Catford Shopping Centre
It’s finally sinking in that plans for the regeneration of Catford Town Centre mean that things could get worse before it gets better. With WHSmith closing its doors next month the news that Risky and Internacionale are also closing this month is bad news for shoppers. I hope that the Council have other retailers lined up for these spaces otherwise the Shopping Centre is … [Read more...]
Catford Broadway is now a ‘pedestrian zone’
Catford Broadway has officially become a ‘pedestrian zone’, a move designed to make it a more appealing place to shop, meet and socialise. This change means that any vehicles using the street as a shortcut between Rushey Green and Catford Road will receive a penalty charge notice. The only vehicles now permitted to enter the pedestrian zone - which also covers the short … [Read more...]
Catford WHSmith to close – another one bites the dust
With the regeneration of Catford on pause it’s sad to hear that WHSmith will close the doors on the Winslade Way branch on 16 July. The sign on the door says the nearest branch is in Lewisham and apologies for the inconvenience. When Matkins & Son on Catford Broadway closed way back when, Smith’s became my go to place for printer ink cartridges and the like. The … [Read more...]
Catford Broadway Market cancelled
The Catford Broadway Market is no more due to lack of traders. According to Light and Bubbly the few traders that wanted to continue will now be situated at the clock tower end of Lewisham market from this Sunday onwards between 9am-5pm. This is sad news indeed as I’m sure many of us were looking forward to seeing the monthly market grow, providing an improved shopping … [Read more...]

Christmas lights switch on and Catford Broadway Market
The Christmas lights will be switched on in Catford on Sunday 1 December at 4.30pm. A special guest will turn on the lights but whilst you wait for that to happen, you can browse the stalls of the Catford Broadway Market. The market is between 10am-4.30pm with offerings of Christmas decorations, street food and local speciality foods. There will also be live entertainment … [Read more...]
Support Catford Broadway Market
I took a stroll down Catford Broadway market today, it was a lovely day for it. I can't believe we're in October. Despite the roadworks, the stallholders were out waiting for us to descend on them. I hate shopping so this was a pleasant experience, no hustle or bustle, just strolling. I admit I was searching for cakes but for those who don't have a sweet tooth, there … [Read more...]
And so it begins – Catford Broadway makeover
If you’ve walked down Catford Broadway recently you may have noticed road works and the absence of your favourite market stalls from the Rushey Green entrance. This is due to major refurbishment being carried out by Lewisham Council to attract more shoppers and visitors to the town centre. Between now and spring 2014, the Council’s contractors will be: laying brand new … [Read more...]
Catford’s lack is its saving grace
With rioting going on all over London, I decided to take a trip into Rushey Green at 10.30 tonight because I needed to know what I was going to have to face in the morning. The news covered the riots in Lewisham but barely touched on Catford so off I went. With my daughter for company, I parked the car on Engleheart Road and headed to the island to see JD sports for myself. … [Read more...]
