Programme unveiled for Catford film festival

14/09/2016 By Editor Leave a Comment

film-festival-02A diverse selection of cult films, independent shorts and blockbuster favourites make up the programme for a new community-led film festival in south east London.

The Catford Free Film Festival, a celebration of film for all of the community, will run from Friday 16 to Saturday 24 September 2016, at venues across Catford. With eight screenings and two special workshops on offer, the entire festival is completely free to attend.

The community film festival is delivered by Catford Film, a voluntary group that has delivered a number of successful, free film screenings in Catford since 2014, including sellout outdoor screenings on Catford Broadway and Culverly Green.

The festival comes about after a successful crowd funding campaign that saw almost £7,850 raised through donations from 78 individuals and groups, Catford South assembly and Lewisham Council. A further £2,000 was raised through sponsorship from Northwood Estate Agents (Lewisham & Catford).

The festival will kick off in style with an Opening Gala screening of Baz Luhrmann’s ‘The Great Gatsby’ at Lewisham’s showpiece Catford Broadway theatre. Before the film begins, guests will be treated to a special performance by the chart topping Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Choir. Guests are encouraged to dress the part with a glamourous black tie dress code, that will match the 1920s opulence of both venue and film.

film-festival-01Other highlights include free film-making and editing workshops, which are all now fully booked, an outdoor screening of Monty Python’s signature absurdity ‘Life of Brian’ on the Catford Broadway and a host of other musical and cinematic treats.
The festival will end with a gala screening of ‘Life is Beautiful’ the Oscar winning  dramatic comedy from Roberto Benigni at St Laurence Church on Saturday 24 September.

Chair of Catford Film, Keith Arnold said: “We were blown away by the support we received from local people when we shared our plans for the Catford Free Film Festival earlier this year and really excited to bring such a broad range of films to some really fantastic venues.

“We want to bring our community together through a common interest in film and we hope that everyone will get involved in the festival this September. Everyone is welcome to get involved and we’re looking forward to welcoming you to our screenings and events in September.

Director of Northwood Estate Agents (Lewisham & Catford), Michael Lee said: “We’re really pleased to support the Catford Free Film Festival and looking forward to enjoying a jampacked week of cinema and music in September.

“As a lifelong Catford resident, I hope that everyone in our community comes together to enjoy this fantastic programme of free entertainment,”
